Music has been an integral part of Matthew's life from early childhood. His family inspired a lifelong love and respect for music, and he began formal piano lessons at age eight. He studied a wide range of genres, including classical, jazz, sacred church, and even Disney. Soon after, Matthew began playing the saxophone, guitar, and bass, and he also opted to begin singing (outside the shower). With the nourishing support of his family, he developed his gift into a performing art and entertained both his family and the community at every possible chance. By the time he was in high school, Matthew's own music teacher passed on the responsibility of giving lessons to some of the younger children.

He began his higher education at Northwest Christian University. There, he was quickly drawn in to the musical groups and became an integral part of the development, accompaniment, and presentation of music for the university. He spent two years as the Chapel Band leader, playing anything from piano and guitar to the djembe. He also spent two years as a member of New Creation, the university's traveling singing group. He earned his B.A. (magna cum laude) in Music Studies. He was awarded the Exemplary Music Award, the highest honor given to music students at NCU.

Matthew continues to be an active musician, lending his skills at various churches playing piano, guitar, and voice for worship services. In these various groups, he provides both instrumental knowledge and an ear for sound that leads these groups to further development and worship. He tutored those wishing to learn more about music and helped them develop their musical talents. For a time, he studied Music Thanatology (musical comfort using harp and voice at the bedside of patients near the end of life), learning harp and a respect for how music can touch the soul, even in one's last moments.

Throughout his schooling, Matthew continued to teach informally. Recognizing his joy for music education, he created Wimer Music Studio. He joined the Oregon Music Teacher's Association and set up shop in Eugene, Oregon. Teaching piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, and voice, Matthew extends his eclectic knowledge and skills for the enjoyment and education of students of all ages.
